Applications are invited for a fully-funded PhD studentship, starting on 1st December 2019 or soon after, in the School of Computer Science at the University of Nottingham, in partnership with Cyber Dyne.
Cyber Dyne is a software company focused on Intelligent Optimisation and Prescriptive AI. Its main product is KIMEME, an advanced multidisciplinary optimisation platform based on state-of-the-art bio-inspired metaheuristics and Machine Learning techniques.
The topic of the studentship is “Problem Analysis based Algorithmic Design for Industry 4.0”. This exciting project is expected to lay the theoretical foundation and provide practical solutions for a novel technology aimed at addressing large-scale industrial optimisation problems, with reference to the case study of a leading international company in the automotive sector. The developed algorithms and software prototype will be tested on real-world cases and later integrated in KIMEME. During the PhD programme, the perspective student will have the opportunity to work with a highly qualified team of computer scientists and skilled software engineers, and interact with a major industrial customer on hard-to-solve real-world problems. A secondment at the Cyber Dyne R&D department in Italy, as well as short visiting periods at the industrial customer’s factories, will be possible.
For this studentship, a strong command of Object-Oriented programming in Java and Python and a solid background in mathematics are required. Previous experience in machine learning and agile software development is a plus.
The studentship is for a minimum of three years and include a stipend of (minimum) £14,777 per year and tuition fees. It is available to students of UK and EU nationality. Applicants are normally expected to have a first-class Masters degree in Computer Science or a related discipline, and must obtain the support of a potential supervisor in the School prior to submitting their application.
